Had It Beat It Multiple Myeloma Survivor Shirt . There have been multiple shifts that have happened in my career. The first one is when I released Glitter Boy in 2017. I believe that was the declaration of me being in this space and being taken seriously as an image maker. Then you fast forward to when I shot my family for a Valentino campaign in 2018 and everyone realized I wasn’t a one-hit wonder. People started to see my range and acknowledge that I can do fashion and do it well. I also attribute my early success to my first commission from Condé Nast. I did a story for Allure called Goodbye to “Good Hair” and that’s when people started to really solidify that there was more to me. Another massive turning point would have to be the 2020 pandemic. The work I was able to do within that time was so refreshing. While we were in an indefinite period of “pausing,” I was still able to create. I was trying to figure out how I could keep going. Luckily, my subjects happened to be my family so I was fortunate in that way. I ended up doing FaceTime shoots that sort of signaled to a lot of editors that I was still thinking outside of the box.

I couldn’t go out into the streets because I was living with my grandparents and my younger siblings, so putting them or myself at risk of coronavirus wasn’t an option. It was very scary to not only be living through a pandemic but also to see the world react to the Black Lives Matter movement after the death of George Floyd. I’m lucky to have a platform that is pretty large on social media. My response was to do what I know best, by creating a space for me to build and find community in. I have friends whose accounts were getting suspended for sharing vital information. That entire period was weird and violent and in general not okay. Everyone’s voices were being suppressed. With Glitter Boy, when it came out, I was dealing with a lot of imposter syndrome. When I entered this industry it was difficult to find people who looked like me. I had no infrastructure and I didn’t study photography. I went to school for journalism and photography was something I’ve always done as a hobby. Now it’s my career. So that was my ultimate shift. When the bigger brand stuff started to come, I needed to learn how to advocate for myself. I’ve just been learning in this industry, especially the business side of it all.
