If you’re afraid of retirement it’s because you’ve got a limited definition of retirement and a sad definition of aging. I can’t wait. I intend to do things I love, try new things, keep learning every day. Spend time reading, traveling, quilting, gardening, visiting family. I was forcibly retired earlier than I wanted to be but forced retirement turned into welcome retirement. I worked close to 30 years on Wall Street and then—goodbye.Fortunately I have enough $$ in my IRA to make that happen. It means moving to a less expensive area than CT but i’ll adjust and i’ve found a beautiful house in upstate NY—not upstate as NY’ers define it but real upstate. I move in two months and I’m not looking back. So I had to retire 2 years ago, age 64. But I had a new after 1,5 months, and have been working there since, about half time depending on projects. I think this is an optimal situation for me now. And I get to use my brain, learn new things and also have time for my grandchildren.

I was nowhere near being ready to retire. It was devastating. But, 12 years later, I am busy volunteering with four different community projects of my own creation, and two afternoons a week are taken up with seeing grandchildren ,one 12, one 15, after school. Two of my projects ,running monthly classes for U3A, require quite a lot of research, which I enjoy very much.I have made so many new friends this that I can barely remember how lonely and miserable I was for the first few years of retirement. She’s so fortunate to be able to follow her passion joyfully. I followed my passion which was teaching in the remedial work and loved it.But administrators and teaching methods changed due to school finances and class room teaching was not my strength.So my passion became out dated. After that I worked to survive and found some happiness in any job I had figuring that God could use me wherever I was.Now it’s so good to be retired and be my own boss and I actually get to tutor for a literacy program for adults. I would love to read your book. Retirement from work doesn’t mean retirement from thinking. You can start a group for those who love writing and thinking just like you. In fact, after retirement most of the people have so much knowledge and potential, this is the time to live and do what you love in fullest. Best wishes to you, dear lady.
