I’ve had them jump on me when I’m gaming and accidentally headbutt me. I’ve been tangled up in leads, I’ve had to clean dead badger and fox from their fur. I’ve had to pull them away from eating various types of animal poop only to have them lick me. Once you’ve bought your eighteenth squeaky ball and gifted it, again, to the lip-smacking, eager canine chum by your side at the pet store, you start to seriously consider whether it’s a ploy by a smart dog and you’re being played like a piano. But, on a more serious note, there genuinely are things you should know going in. Vet bills aren’t cheap. Exercise, depending on breed, is as much as a long walk or run a day down to a potter in the garden. Dog food isn’t too bad in cost, but overall extras can rack up. Make sure you have people at the ready to take care of them if you go away or resign yourself to the small fortune necessary for kennels to take care of them. They don’t need much other than food, water, company, attention and exercise – but you’ve got to be ready to provide all of that. Dogs of different breeds also come with a greater risk of health problems. Pugs struggle to breathe, labs get bad hips, etc. Research this.
